Merry Christmas

Reading tea leaves: military part of the Ukraine crisis will be over by next summer with Russia prevailing. Political and economic adjustments will go on for at least ten years. No nuclear flare up; too much money at stake for the military industrial complex.

Transcripts of Putin latest events

From a comment in MoA (I have not read them yet)

“transcripts of Putin's latest events, today's presser and the Council of State Meeting that preceded it. That makes for five very important events this week that started with Russia's Meetings Plan for Tomorrow: Council for Strategic Development and National Projects, ‘

A brief discussion at The Duran. Wide ranging discussion of various factions in US and changing attitudes of different countries in Europe.

A question which keeps coming up is whether there will be nuclear confrontation. My guess that it is unlikely since there will be no profits for the military industrial congressional complex.

A discussion with Jeffrey Sachs by’The Duran’

Jeffrey Sachs had a ringside seat with Russia since Gorbachev and Yeltsin times. He has been involved in in economic development issues as an advisor to various country from Poland and Russia to Latin America. As far as I can see, his record is mixed. The response fromWashington to his suggestions were positive in the case Poland and negative in the case of Russia, he says. He attributes this to the influence of neocons. In the discussion there is not much about the attitude of other Eastern European countries; the role of nationalism as well as the attitude of the nations to the then attractive side of western life. Module this, it seems to correspond to the opinions of various people like Douglas Macegregor, Alexander Mercouris, Scott Ritter and others that we have been following. The general feel is now Russia has an upper hand and cannot really loose unless there are unexpected developments like nuclear options.

A comment from Moon of Alabama about controlling the oligarchs.

Though Chinese trajectory to wealth is known, Russian trajectory is not clear. It certainly had an industrial base which might not have been very efficient. The following comment give some plausible reasons.

@wagelaborer 14

You misunderstand China is and Russia too.

87% of China's economy is owned by regional banks which are responsible for recycling profits directly into their regional economies. Basically an inversion of the capitalist system where the bulk of the capital serves the oligarchs, with a tiny trickle going to the workers and even less supporting the public sector.

This is how China has sustained its growth while financing urbanization, public infrastructure and facilities, increased median income almost ten times over since the 1990s, eliminated extreme poverty and almost eliminated poverty in all but the most rural backwaters.

In China the billionaires step very carefully, because they know that they, along with any politicians they suborn, are, if caught engaging in corrupt practices, likely to be tried, and if found guilty, executed pour encourager les autres.

As for Russia, the post-Soviet jewish-Ukrainian oligarchs who looted the public and purchased the government enabling them to make out like bandits under Yeltsin (principally buying up Soviet assets for pennies on the dollar using funds from the USA and Israel see e.g. Braguinsky Serguey (2009). Postcommunist Oligarchs in Russia: Quantitative Analysis. The Journal of Law and Economics. 2009 52:2, 307-349) were decimated under Putin, who offered the семибанкирщина (Seven Bankers, six jewish) and other oligarchs a simple choice. Stay out of politics or join their dead, jailed, exiled or bankrupted peers (See e.g. Harding Luke (2007-07-02). The richer they come: Can Russia's oligarchs keep their billions - and their freedom? The Guardian).

Douglas McGregor has been mentioned a couple of times in the above discussion. Here is the latest from him https://youtu.be/k0BhWNWl0Q0

One point that is missing from the discussions above is the role of bureaucracy in the EU. The power of bureaucracy seems to vary from country to country and I think that is like a deep state in EU. In India it is generally subservient to politicians and the deep state seems to be some sort of Hindutva RSS combine. Intone US it may be associated to the military industrial congressional complex. What about Russia, China etc?

The equipment was shipped to Chechnya, but it will avail the thieves naught, because the John Deere dealership reached out over the internet and bricked these tractors, using an in-built kill-switch.”

A quote from James Vincent “Beyond Measure: The Hidden History of Measurement from Cubits to Quantum Constants”

“To measure something, after all, is to impose limits on the world: to say this far but no further. It means fitting reality into categories that can never capture its full complexity. For when we try to measure some particular aspect of the world, we are inevitably making a choice that reflects our biases and desires. Measurement is a tool that reinforces what we find important in life, what we think is worth paying attention to. The question, then, of who gets to make those choices is of the utmost importance.

These dynamics can play out in very different ways. Some examples of mismeasure may be petty and slight, like the humiliations of workplace bureaucracies – painful in the moment but forgotten easily enough. Others are difficult to fathom in the extent of their cruelty. Consider the horrors of eugenics or scientific racism: movements motivated by ugly notions of racial hierarchy but justified through the pretend objectivity of measurement, conveyed through comparisons of skull sizes and IQ tests.

For Blake and his sympathisers, such barbarism is an expected product of the civilised world. The twentieth-century philosophers Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno noted that the entire process of abstraction – of creating generalised rules and categories – is one of the foundations of modernity, for better or worse. It is a product of the same Enlightenment thinking that made Blake shudder and that continues to shape the societies we live in today. ‘Classification is a condition of knowledge, not knowledge itself, and knowledge in turn dissolves classification,’ they wrote. The world as we know it today is ‘ruled by equivalence’; by a desire to reduce everything to number and make ‘dissimilar things comparable by reducing them to abstract quantities’.”

True Grit

True Grit ‘Biologists only recently recognized that cows have complex social behaviors, involving depths of comprehension that we might not expect of animals stereotyped as grungy, placid, and dull-witted. A feral herd, for example, will organize nurseries by dividing calves into age groups, each usually overseen by one adult cow while the rest go out to graze. For this to work, the sitters need to understand that their role is to look after calves that are not their own, even if it means settling for low-grade fodder while others enjoy greener pastures. The calves have to grasp that they are under vigilance despite their mothers being out of sight.’

Puzzling aspects in Kherson

The following is a discussion by Alexander Mercouris

There is also a discussion at https://youtu.be/pHQgCGwj2Kc

The puzzle is that Ukraine stopped throwing soldiers in its usual fashion and started shelling as in Donbas. And Russia’s moves are even more puzzling. Russia seems to have enough forces to resist assaults but is not taking any initiative and the moves of evacuation etc are confusing various people and Russia does not seem to be doing enough to improve its supply situation. So far the dirty bomb has not materialised. One possibility is that Russia feels that time is on its side. There is gradual deterioration of Ukraine’s armed forces, infrastructure and economy and also of  Europe and there is continued decline of supplies from the west. Russia seems capable of further damage to infrastructure whenever it wants and there are further possibilities of destroying bridges connecting Eastern Ukraine. Such moves may damage Ukraine’s potential to continue war without too much effort from Russia. May be.

Another excerpt from ‘Einstein and the Quantum’ by A.Douglas Stone

It seems that Einstein had a hand in so many developments in quantum mechanics. Here is one of th3m:

“Some months earlier Einstein had met privately with Heisenberg to dis- cuss quantum mechanics. Heisenberg had presented his view that the new theory should restrict itself to describing observable quantities, and not un- observable electron orbits. Einstein rejected this view, leading Heisenberg to rejoin, “isn’t that precisely what you have done with relativity theory.”35 Einstein responded, “possibly I did use this form of reasoning . . . but it is nonsense all the same.36 . . . It is the theory which decides what can be ob- served.”37 This conversation stuck with Heisenberg, and a year later, while pondering the meaning of quantum mechanics, it came back to him. “It must have been one evening after midnight when I suddenly remembered my conversation with Einstein, and particularly his statement, ‘it is the the- ory which decides what we can observe.’ I was immediately convinced that the key to the gate that had been closed so long must be sought right here.”38 Within days he had used the new quantum mechanics to prove his uncertainty principle.” From ‘Einstein and the Quantum’ by A. Douglas Stone.
As I mentioned earlier, this book was recommended by Ashutosh Jogalekar, one of the best science writers I know.

An excerpt from ‘Einstein and the Quantum’ by A.Douglas Stone

A few days ago Ashutosh Jogalekar recommended the book ‘Einstein and the Quantum’ by A. Douglas Stone. It has an interesting section on S.N.Bose which seems to suggest that Bose did not quite realise what he did. He also seemed to have missed a good opportunity. “…..Bose tarried in Paris nearly a full year learning x-ray techniques before working up the courage to move on to Berlin in October of 1925 and finally meeting Einstein a few weeks later. In the intervening year, Einstein had taken up Bose’s novel counting method and extended it to treat the quantum ideal gas, leading to truly remarkable discoveries, about which Bose was unaware. For Bose, “the meeting was most interesting. . . . he challenged me. He wanted to find out whether my hypothesis, this particular kind of statistics, did really mean something novel about the interaction of quanta, and whether I could work out the details of this business.” During Bose’s visit, Werner Heisenberg’s first paper came out on the new approach to quantum theory known as matrix me- chanics (of which we will hear more later). Einstein specifically suggested that Bose try to understand “what the statistics of light quanta and the transition probabilities for radiation would look like in the new theory.”33 However, Bose was not able to make progress. He seems to have had a difficult time assimilating these rapid new developments and wrote some- what despairingly to a friend: “I have made an honest resolution of working hard during these months, but it is so hard to begin, when once you have given up the habit.”

‘Swimming camels’ of Jamnagar

https://ruralindiaonline.org/en/articles/jamnagars-swimming-camels-in-deep-waters/

Long and interesting discussion

but unsatisfactory as they did not quite explain the economic factors except Yves Smith to some extent. Gonzalo Lira seems right but a bit of a loose canon. This video is also posted in Naked Capitalism. inthe comments, Yves Smith explains a bit of the unpleasant commements by Gnzalo Lira about Scott Ritter: Yves Smith October 13, 2022 at 9:22 pm Lira did an unnecessarily nasty takedown of Ritter not long after Lira was detained by the SBU and had all of his channels taken from him by them, which led to Lira being demonetized. Lira’s beef was Ritter’s tendency to make sharp changes in his readings of the war, without similarly sharp changes in underlying facts. I had relied on Ritter unduly early on and was also persuaded by his bullish take on Russia’s prospects, and I think Lira was mad at feeling duped. Ritter was aggressively saying Russia would wrap up the war quickly, as in a few weeks. He then flip-flopped when NATO was going to arm Ukraine and said it would be a game changer. He’s also made questionable statements about NATO being effective at training, which might have been true when they had the leisure of time, but can’t be now if nothing else based on how the Ukrainians have to be trained out of country, in too little time (a mere 3 weeks for the ones in the UK) and too few in number. Ritter also declared Lira to be dead when he disappeared. If you read Ritter”s Wikipedia entry (and there’s no reason for the pro-Establishment Wikipedia to cut Ritter any slack), Ritter was found guilty 2x, both time stings, both time with no actual sex, just phone and IIRC sexting. The first time was supposed to be sealed. It was nevertheless presented in the second case, where Ritter maintained the woman he never met was pretending to be 15 but wasn’t. When he was being prosecuted, you can guarantee the police got his computers and communication devices. If they had found any kiddie porn or evidence of solicitation or sex with minors, you can be sure that would have been brought in.

Ukraine Update from ‘the Duran’

I have been following closely for some time the Russian SMO. it seems to me that it will go on for at least six more months. Russia has the upperhand and the coming winter will bring more economic woes to EU and Ukraine. Russia seems to be keeping its main army mostly in reserve to face possible NATO threats and is numerically at a disadvantage in Ukraine. A poem by Jeannette Encinias

 https://www.jeannetteencinias.com/beneath-the-sweater-the-skin

Beneath the Sweater
and the Skin

How many years of beauty do I have left?

she asks me.

How many more do you want?

Here. Here is 34. Here is 50.

When you are 80 years old

and your beauty rises in ways

your cells cannot even imagine now

and your wild bones grow luminous and

ripe, having carried the weight

of a passionate life.

When your hair is aflame

with winter

and you have decades of

learning and leaving and loving

sewn into

the corners of your eyes

and your children come home

to find their own history

in your face.

When you know what it feels like to fail

ferociously

and have gained the

capacity

to rise and rise and rise again.

When you can make your tea

on a quiet and ridiculously lonely afternoon

and still have a song in your heart

Queen owl wings beating

beneath the cotton of your sweater.

Because your beauty began there

beneath the sweater and the skin,

remember?

This is when I will take you

into my arms and coo

YOU BRAVE AND GLORIOUS THING

you've come so far.

I see you.

Your beauty is breathtaking.
