Researchers have uncovered more than 30 defective genes that trigger those conditions. Kastner and collaborators discovered or co-discovered 13 of them, reporting their most recent find in August. By revealing what drives those diseases, Kastner’s work opened the door for life-changing and even lifesaving treatments for patients like Hagopian, other scientists say. “It’s the greatest example of bench to bedside you can think of,” says pediatric rheumatologist Ronald Laxer of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto."
