"But what crystallised at the Unesco Congress are the larger economic implications of the OER (Open Education Resources) movement and its potential to dramatically expand the global knowledge economy. As policymakers struggle to apply traditional fiscal and monetary tools to mend world markets restrained by weak purchasing power, accelerated learning based on OERs could do more to stimulate global economic demand and growth than all the world's tax holidays combined - then multiplied ten-fold.
........................
Moreover, there is mounting evidence that learners can be trained more quickly using OER. A recent study conducted by scholars associated with Carnegie Mellon University's Open Learning Initiative demonstrated that students who use OERs can obtain the same or better learning outcomes in half the time compared with students using traditional methods."

I never liked classes and mostly learnt (mathematics, but it may not be possible in all subjects) myself. I think what helps is having people to talk with. Possibly online tutorials and learning with a group of friends and other avenues are worth exploring. Thanks for the input. I think that online education does suit some students for the reasons you mentioned in some subjects at least. Possibly some sort of combinations where students have more choices will evove. These may also vary depending on the country, region, and economic status of the students. In countries like India parents decide often what their children should study. It is also possible at some stages students may not be mature enough decide on the subjects to study or their interests may oscillate. Perhaps systems of consultants, monitors etc may help in some programs. Hopefully, at some stage, some well defined programs using a combination of online courses and regular courses will evolve where students have more choice depending on their aptitude, temperament, resources etc..
Thank you for sharing this wonderful thought and I think this will be a great reference for others to know the advantages of signing for an online education and the great benefits they can acquire with this notion.

A good education does not have to come at a massive cost. There are many people who stay out of free online classes; because their reasoning is that teaching the courses will be less than you pay for traditional institutions.
On line education is beneficial especially for the professionals who work and rarely get time. They can pursue a course through distance learning at their convenient time.
