Monitoring other immune cells Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell made the other key discovery in 2001, when they presented the explanation for why a specific mouse strain was particularly vulnerable to autoimmune diseases. They had discovered that the mice have a mutation in a gene that they named Foxp3. They also showed that mutations in the human equivalent of this gene cause a serious autoimmune disease, IPEX. Two years after this, Shimon Sakaguchi was able to link these discoveries. He proved that the Foxp3 gene governs the development of the cells he identified in 1995. These cells, now known as regulatory T cells, monitor other immune cells and ensure that our immune system tolerates our own tissues.

He passed away on August First.I met Jack and Lili in TIFR in 1972 while he was on his way back to USA after visiting Steklov institute. He gave a course on Morava K-Theory in Bombay attended by me and M.S. Raghunathan and later visited ISI, Kolkata. I visited Jack and Lili in Kolkata and later a few times in Baltimore and Chalottville some times with my family. Lili worked in Indiana while I visited the university during 1979-80. At that time I did not know driving and Lili regularly took us shopping and Jack used to visit her there. Both have been very dear friends for a long time. I have been regularly in touch with him by gmail and I will miss him. A memory of Jack Morava: He was visiting ISI Kolkata. I think he met an agricultural scientist from ISI in Moscow and I think that is how he ended up visiting ISI. We had a wonderful time for a week or so and the agricultural scientist arranged a musical concert in house. The lady who sang was not a professional singer I think but she was transformed when she started singing. When the time came to leave, Jack and Lili came to Howrah station to see me off. Jack was an affectionate chap and I was afraid he would hug me at the station. At the last moment I stood a yard away from him and stretched my hand to say good bye. But it did not help. He gave big hug anyway. I got into the train and reached my berth and met a fellow traveller introduced myself.
